appear in a soft drinks commercial

They wanted Jack to appear in a soft drinks commercial. He had to speak a catchphrase and do a few other things. In particular, he was asked to taste the drink and smile into the camera.
... a soft drink commercial ... smile to/at the camera.

Does the second version in the above sound right and mean about the same as the first? Thanks.
