Appear for

Hi,

I don't know if "appear for" is common in this dialog.

X: "...Where is he going?"
Y:" ...He's appearing for Alison's mum to take her report card."

Is that natural and is there any other choice?

Thanks!

I have checked online dictionary, but am still not sure whether it can be used when one is not available to attend an event and someone else acts for the him/her. Any comment on this?

Ah. Well it sounds a little off, perhaps. 'Appear for' usually applies to a star, a personality or someone else of relative importance. In natural conversation, I would expect something like this:

X: Where's he going?
Y: He's going to pick up Alison's report card for her mother.
