Apostrophe

Why is it that one requires to attach an apostrophe in, for example, the following sentence:

Two days' farther march.

Would the following be wrong:

Two days farther march.

What is the purpose of the apostrophe in such a context.

I've seen the same apply to " two months' ", for example.

Cheers

Welcome to EF, SLWAR! I have no idea what farther march means but the apostrophe is required after the plural s if the genitive case is needed: It was [a ] two days' march. You can also say: It was a two-day march. The sentences mean that whoever marched, marched for two days. The march lasted two days.
