I use 'apolitcal' to describe people who have no interest in politics. Often such people don't even bother to vote in national elections.
I use 'nonpolitical' to describe situations or events which have nothing to do with politics or elected officials. (The appointment of the head of a health organization would normally be a nonpolitical appointment, for example.)

Excellent (and probably totally correct) distinction. I originally subscribed to this post because I wasn't sure how to answer it but was sure I'd see good responses.
