Apocryphal and sprat to catch a mackerel

Hi

I am aware that the word apocryphal is used often in stories and articles -- but today, for the first time ever, I ran into the idiom sprat to catch a mackerel in our local newspaper.

Could you please tell me how common these two are among native speakers, especially in spoken English?

Thanks,

Tom
