Aphesis-Clippin

Can anyone explain to me is aphesis a sort of clipping or are the two different and in what way? E.g. is cute-acute considered apesis or fore-clipping and why? I get mixed answers, that aphesis is a subordinate of clipping and that the two should be distinguished from each other.. Thanks.
