Anything Vs Nothing

1. "Why don't you say anything to us?"

2. "Why don't you say nothing to us?"

Is it true that Americans tend to use nothing more than anything in sentences compared to British and Aussies?

It's true that people do use "nothing" in sentences like those- but I don't think they are totally correct. I've heard people say "I don't mean nothing" - this to me is not what they intend to say, could be correct colloquially. Not completely correct because you've already indicated negation by using don't- why use nothing then.

  • Don't say nothing would actually mean - don't say nothing- say something, but please don't stay quiet(say nothing)
