The other negative impact of the huge decline in state-funded health facilities is the grossly disproportionate number of people with mental illness within American prisons. This is the direct result of the failed policies of deinstitutionalization (Vitiello, 2010, pp. 57-71). In most cases, the patients released from the hospitals did not receive extensive care and, therefore, faced poverty and homelessness. Due to worsened conditions of individuals with mental illness outside the institution, maintaining jobs for these individuals becomes harder. Consequently, this could contribute to further increase in poverty amongst the individuals with mental illness. Little or no income would make it harder for the patients to afford their medication outside the institution. Moreover, not being able to receive treatments outside the hospitals could further worsen the conditions of the patients. This circle effect has a negative effect on behaviours of the patients outside the institution. As a result, these individuals commit more crimes. This issue with increased crimes and incarceration could be resolved by institutionalization of individuals with mental illness.
