Speech & Pronunciation

any tips on overcoming self-consciousness when speaking English?

Eugh. This is probably the wrong place to vent, but I'll take my chances.

Never a talker, I'm just horrible when it comes to speaking. Even when I speak in my native language, I butcher my grammar all the time. I don't normally care as long as I get my point acrossed; however, I feel a lot more self-conscious where butchering grammar is concerned when I speak English because I have a really bad accent. My personal observation has shown that this makes me more-a LOT more reserved when I converse with a native speaker. As a result, I come across as arrogant and/or unfriendly. I realize this will be especially bad when I finally begin my job-hunt. What impression would an interviewer get when he sees someone who smiles a lot and gives mostly one-sentence responses? Exactly.

Just as a side note, I'm thinking of taking a public speaking class next semester. In theory I shouldn't care what other people think, but I really don't want to humiliate myself too badly and am wondering if I should go through it at all. I still have another year to go.

Hi Wuv, I don't think I can be of much help, I don't practice spoken English much yet, but I feel your problem might well be one of my future problems. I can just say that... when I speak English because I have a really bad accent.

  • that you could try focusing a little on pronunciation, to reduce your strong accent.
  • If when you talk with others you clearly notice that the others speak very differently from you, chances are you are distracted, maybe ashamed, even worried.
