any mistakes in the sentence?

Hello,

Is the following sentence correct?
John Smith, a/the doctoral student whom you supervise, has recommended me this position.
I am completely unsure about comas there. They should be there if it was written in my native language, but in English it can be different.
What is the correct article in the above mentioned sentence?

Thanks

If there's only one doctoral student supervised by the person you address your sentence to, you should use "the". Also, I don't think Present Perfect ("has recommended") is needed here. Past Simple may be better.

has recommended me this position is a bit awkward and ambiguous.

Do you mean has recommended this position to me or has recommended me for this position?
