"any" - Is it necessary or not?

I've discussed about a specific sentence: "Could we stay longer?"

Is it really necessary to put "any" before "longer" or not?

TKS.

Hi, 'Any' emphasizes to the listener that you do not have a particular length of time in mind. eg You will consider staying for a day, or a week, or a month. Best wishes, Clive
