"Any is fine" or "any are fine"?

When using "any" alone, is it singular or plural or does it depend on the meaning?

For example do I say "any is fine/ok" or "any are fine/ok"?

Does it depend on what "any" refers to? For example:

"I need two pens, any are ok"

and

"I need a pen, any is ok" ?

Does the same notion apply to other sentences with "any" as a stand alone subject?

For a singular specific countable item, we add "one." I cannot think of an instance of "any" as a singular subject pronoun.

I need a pen, any one (of those) is ok.

I need a pen, any one will do.
