Any ideas on a better word option?

Any ideas on a better word option instead of 'running' or 'overseeing'? Due to Cephas’s life as a gladiator and slave, he hated his father for overseeing/running gladiatorial games and enslaving people of various races, and neither father nor son showed any affection for each other.
