Grammar

Any help appreciated

I am writing a story and need a little help.

I have a scene where a girl with teary eyes is sitting by a window staring out into the rain. I leave her there and later I come back to her and now she's not teary-eyed anymore. Can I write: The tears had dried up? Is that grammatical? And does it mean that she's cried so much that there are no tears left? Or can it also mean that she has just stopped crying?
