Any differences between "heretofore" and "hitherto"?

heretofore:

Definition: before this time; until now

Example: Diseases that heretofore were usually confined to rural areas.

Hitherto:

Definition: up until this time; until now

Example: hitherto imperturbable, he now showed signs of alarm

No matter how I interpret it, I always perceive these two words as having the same dictionary definition of "being the case (or not being the case) until the present now".
