"Before" is correct. Remember that the past perfect is what we can call "a previous past" because it happened in the past before some other event.

The people got married. Before that, they already knew each other..First they knew each other. Secondly, they got married. So "knew" is past, but before another past, which is that they got married.
They had known each other before they go
