Any difference?

Naturally, he opened the envelope carefully soon after he entered the room.

When I say, "As was expected" or "As we had thought" instead of "Naturally", does the meaning change?

Top answer

Yes, slightly. Naturally suggests that this was a normal thing to do, that one might expect him to do this. It doesn't mean that anyone had actually thought about it.

It would be similar to As we had thought.
You might use As we thought when talking to someone with whom you had previously discussed what might have happened.
As we had thought would work for the same situation, or if you were discussing the matter later with someone who was not involved in the previous discussion.
