Any difference

Is there any difference between the below sentences? Are they interchangeable?

How long are you staying there?
How long will you stay there?

I think a difference may be is that the second sentence implies that an event has still not happened and is in the future. Or do they just mean the same? Please advice?

Got it. So, if a friend is currently in Hawaii for vacation, and I would like to know how long will he be staying there. Would both of the aforementioned sentences be appropriate?
