Any demonstration / any demonstrations

Hello dear techers!

Which one do you think is correct?

The Bahreini government had earlier warned against any demonstration/any demonstrations near the royal palace.

I have already been told that both are correct but I have hard time understanding why?

I think both are ok.

1. The Bahreini government had earlier warned against any demonstration.
Demonstration at a particular place in the city/country.


2. The Bahreini government had earlier warned against any demonstrations.
Demonstrations at several places within the city/country.

You may also consider that 'demonstration' can also be uncountable.
