My question: Can the first one be used in place of the second?

Yes. It's more indirect, so it doesn't sound as demanding as "... to know your grades".

Edit: Oops! I thought you had 'know' in both sentences. I was comparing these:

I am anxious to know about your grades.
I am anxious to know your grades.

They are not the same.
"I am anxious about your grades." would mean "I fear that your grades are not (or will not be) as good as I would like."
"I am anxious to know your grades." would mean "I am very interested in hearing what your grades were."
