Antonym for ally

Hi.

What is the antonym for ally? The context can be as below;

Ex. America and its European ally imposed sanction on any business with Middle east countries.

Is it simply enemy or foe? Are there any better word for it?

Thanks for your reply. But contender, compititor, contestant and omponent are mostly used in competition-related contexts. They are not normally used in political affairs.

However, if you are talking about a political contest (as an election), opponent is probably the most usual of the lot offered here.

If you wanna use the word "friend" or "friendly" for a country to say they are our ally, how would you put it together? What is the right verbiage? Example;

Germany is a friendly country to US / a friend country of US / a friend of US?
