Antonia: work off his answers

I can't find any meaning that fits the context of a policeman working off the answers of a suspect.

I found that it means 1) get rid of, 2) earn and pay off 3) take it out on sb.

Can you please help me?

Hi Clive,
I am not a native, but I have read the same book. Please consider my interpretation and let us know your opinion:

"I need to work off my answers." I understood as that the detective can not give a whole list of interesting questions, but that he would like to start with one question and than to adapt his follow-up questions with regards to the first answer given, and so on.
