Antonia: spring water

Hello there,

What does it mean tuna in spring water? Is it the regular water or sea water? Does it mean that the tuna is taken from sea and put into a normal water because of some special reason?

Thank you

Hi, When you buy canned tuna you get a choice of canning liquid - in the UK either vegetable oil, brine (salt water) or spring water (mineral water, poncy fresh water. I don't know why they can't use the stuff from the tap). I suppose it is a more neutral option than salty water or oil and would have less effect on the flavour of the fish.

This may also help:

Spring Water is water that is collected from a source underground. It is collected from a bored hold that taps the source of the spring. Although it usually requires minimal treatment before it is bottled, it must retain the same physical properties and composition as the natural spring water from which it originates.
