Antonia: sideboard

Please help me with the following,

1) It is written in the book that ''shingles were removed from roof and sideboards". If sideboards are some kind of cupboards ie the part of furniture, what has that got to do with shingles?

2) metal shed (Is it the shed were tool is kept?)

3) deputy dogs who hadn't a brain between them (there was no smart person among them?)

4) When she saw him, his head turned back (of a dead guy in the water). Does it mean that she saw the back of his head?

Thank you
