Antonia: a positive ID

Hello,

I don't understand what does this mean in the context:

Jeffrey would have a lo stronger leg to stand on in Atlanta if he had a positive ID.

Can you please help me?

Thank you

p.s. Jeffrey is detective investigating a rape and a murder. He has just got a name of the former sexual predator and has just downloaded his picture from the state database. He (sexual p.) is the main suspect at the moment.

Positive ID = Positive Identification. It's an ID card/document that can be used to positively verify one's identify. Some examples are: drivers license, passport, social security card, birth certificate.

Hello Danyoo,

Does this means that he would have much stronger case if he found this person, if he saw that that person really exists, or has an ID?

Antonia,

To be honest I can't tell from your original post. It's either as you say, or if he had a positive ID of himself. Does it say anywhere in the story that the detective is hiding his own identity for some reason?

I would take "positive ID" to mean "positive identification", in this context.

For instance, if someone had seen the s.p. at the scene of the crime, and then identified him from a photo, the detective would have "a positive ID".

HI Danyoo,

the detective is not hiding his identity.

Mr Pedantic,

Does it mean that the detective is hoping to have an eye witness who has identified the murderer?

Not necessarily an eye witness; a DNA match would provide a positive ID as well; or some CCTV footage!

Thanks Mr Pedantic.
