Antecedent

Hi, I saw this entry at Naver.co.kr's dictionary for the word 'antecedent' and wonder if the word 'similar' in 'similar to it' should not be 'same'.

Pasted frome its entry:

N-javascript:flink("COUNT") : javascript:flink("us")u javascript:flink("with") javascript:flink("sup")p
javascript:flink("An") javascript:flink("antecedent") javascript:flink("of") javascript:flink("something") javascript:flink("happen")ed javascript:flink("or") javascript:flink("exist")ed javascript:flink("before") javascript:flink("it") javascript:flink("and") javascript:flink("was") javascript:flink("similar") javascript:flink("to") javascript:flink("it") javascript:flink("in") javascript:flink("some") javascript:flink("way").[ javascript:flink("FORMAL") ]

If you are going to quantify "same" with "in some way," then you've just made it "similar."

I'd say it's correct. The Ford Model T was antecedent to the Ford Model A. It was similar, but there were some remarkable differences.

The Model A was antecedent to the Model B, but I have to look closely to tell the difference.

Okay, you specify the noun usage. I was using it as an adjective. Even so, it amounts to the same thing, except with the adjective, similarity may n
