Answers with 'this' and 'that'
My grammar book says that when 'this' and 'that' are used in questions 'it' should be used in replies.
For example,
A : Is this your pencil?
B: Yes, it is.
A : Are those your books?
B : No, they are not.
Is this true or can I also answer them with 'this' and 'those' like 'Yes, this is' and 'No, those are not'? What do you native English speakers think?

Otherwise you have to deal with the position of the hat relative to the speaker and you.
You ( B ) are holding the unknown object or you are near it:
