I suppose that, walking backwards is unatural for ants; so, the ant lied.

Note that from a purely geometrical perspective, there is little difference between the first and last ant; it all depends on which way they are looking. If they are looking forward, then ant 1 has two ants behind him. If they are looking backward, then ant 3 has two ants behind him.
