Another word for "mistake"..need opinion

Hi!
I am writing an article on recycling and I have to write a sentence that conveys the message, "If industries make the minor mistake of ignoring waste, it can become a major crisis for Mother Earth"
That is the general idea I would like to convey. Could you please tell me if "mistake" seems out-of-place here. If yes, could you suggest some alternatives?

To me, 'minor' seems out of place for the seriousness of the failing. Perhaps: If industries make the mistake of ignoring their waste, it can become a major crisis for Mother Earth.

Or something along the lines of "A firm may think ignoring waste is minor offense"
But, again I am no sure if offense is the right word here.
Thanks for the patience !

I am sorry, I had typed in a reply before, but I am not sure if I posted it.
Basically what it said was that I would like to bring out the contrast between minor and major. How something seemingly minor can lead to a major issue.
I hope you get what I am trying to say...

Sorry, but I don't think anyone nowadays would consider ignoring waste a minor offense, no matter how you rephrase it. Perhaps another member will have a better idea.

How about

If industries continue to treat their waste as a minor issue, we soon may have a major crisis here on earth.
