Another word for 'business'?

In Swedish our most usual translation and usage for 'business' is in the sense of 'the purchase and sale of goods in an attempt to make a profit'.

Therefore, when describing 'the purpose with an IT (information technology) department is to serve the business', we instead use another word (Swe: 'verksamhet'). This word gives a more specific focus to all the processes and activities the organisation's employees are carrying out. It is also a part of a common expression to 'department's management individuals' (Swe:verksamhetschefer'). I’d guess we in a unaware way use the Swedish word in the purpose to describe the difference between departments carrying out ‘supportive processes’ and they who run ‘operational processes’, if we use business process definitions.

My question: is there an alternative to 'business' that better describes this secondary definition (processes-activities-department management etc.)?

We use to use the 'line' definition as a opposite to 'project'. But the meaning is in the right neighbourhood, however, I guess it is not used in native English, in the situations I described? I have not seen it around much.

But thanks, anyway! More good ideas?

'the purpose of an IT (information technology) department is to serve operations'?

Thanks,
Just to cross-check from another angle:

The IT department has used the system's functionality to improve the departments processes for a while, and now it hand it over to the operations to do the same"

Most appropriate choice in native ears?

I suggest this:

The IT Department has used the system's functionality to improve its / the other departments' processes temporarily and now it has handed / is handing the system over to Operations to do the same.
