He had just got off work when he picked me up last night. - Is this used correctly?

He got off work before the other action in the past: picking up

EG

5pm=he went to work

8pm=he got off work

8.10pm=he picked me up

2pm the next day=this is when I'm writing about the events of last night.

I'd say "gotten" rather than "got," but that is an American English characteristic.
