Another Letter to Sis

Dear Sis:
For the first time, when reporting the doings in aue, I must report my disappointment with the group of late. The recent topics have been so boring, so mundane, and so achingly detailed in minutia that reading aue is like having to actually read all that is said in one of those pop-ups before you check "I accept".
The lead topic has been about pulling a car in a UK parking space. You'd think that could be covered with a simple paragraph - even a sentence - containing the key phrases of "cut wheels", "pull forward", "stop", "open door", and "get out". But no, this subject has more legs than the Colonel Sanders annual employee picnic. Our friends from the UK evidently reverse into parking spaces (I think there were 27 posts just explaining that "reversing" is the same as "backing up") and must do so under the constraints of narrower lanes and straight-in and not angled (42 posts describing the difference and
17 links to animated flash diagrams) slots.

It's no wonder to me that the Empire has shrunk. It takes them so bloody long to get groceries that they don't have time to pack up their pith helmets to go off and tend to the colonies.

The tea kettle is back. The kettle itself was quickly (for aue) disposed of by a few of the "we have them, you don't" posts, but branched off into a discussion of the superiority of European electric plugs, the inadvisability of sticking your finger into a live electrical socket, and is now mired down by posts containing sentences like "And so on for Ai, where R(An) = R(A1)/n, R(x) being defined as the resistance of x. For each I we consider the currents that flow through the various pieces of wire, by applying Kirchoff's Law etc.".

See what I mean about the Empire? A Yank, if a Yank was disposed to drink hot tea, would write "boil water, dip bag of dried leaves in water, dip again and shake, drink tea." and then go off and invent a multi-level marketing program that just barely avoids being an illegal pyramid scheme. A Brit muses over the resistance of copper wire while his tea gets cold and his colony is taking down the Union Jack and hiring out en masse to make aglets for Nike.
There's some of the usual..cooking instructions for potatoes and rice, the proper positioning and style of punctuation, pronunciation of words, beards, reading recommendations, attacks against character, and cultural differences. Nothing really interesting unless you consider "elderly" to be an innovatively scathing form of character assassination.
The low end of the recent topics has to be the toilet paper thread, though. I think it started off with an over-the-top or around-the-back argument, but then someone butted in with a comment on texture and then it rolled on to dimensions and thickness. You'd think this subject would be flushed early, but even more comments kept poking through. One would assume a group like this would keep their finger on the pulse of word usage, but - instead - the fingers are on the wrong end of the stick.
I'm off now, Sis, to go back and see if anything new and interesting has surfaced. I almost long for the days when English usage was actually discussed and people wondered how old Christopher Johnson really is. Perhaps Simon will have returned.
