Another expression for "scholars, scientists, students should be able to..."

"Scholars, scientists, students or generally sensible persons should be able to distinguish relevant from irrelevant information."

I am looking for another expression for "scholars, scientists, students" so someone will not just see it as a cop-out and pretense, but still sees the seriousness of this distinction of information and doesn't just swat it aside as a "subjective" idea.
