"Another day..."
For instance:
"I remember first seeing that homeless man picking any leftovers at McDonald's.
Another day, he was sleeping on the beach, lying on the shingles."

That use of "shingle" is practically unknown in the US. In the UK, I believe it is a mass noun only, like "gravel". Your man was lying on the shingle, not the shingles.
