Another confusing sentence.

"Few of us take the pains to study cherished convictions; indeed, we almost have a natural repugnance to doing so."

I don't understand "our cherished convictions"? What are they? When do we have to study cherished convictions? is it correct when we are involved in a litigation?

sorry I have check the meaning of conviction in my dic but cannot understand the sentence.

Thanks
