Announcing & to announce

Look at this question:

Now, it is eleven fifty-nine. All of us are still sitting, __ the clock __ the New Year.
A.listenning to, to announce B. and listened to, announcing
C.to listen,announce D.listenning to,announcing

Is the right choice A or D? I really got confused.

Thanks for your help~~

Hello! I'd choose D, though "listenning" should only take one "n". Or: "listening for the clock to announce the New Year", but it's not an opion, is it?

Thank you.

Sorry, I've made a mistake. It should be listening.Emotion: smile

I will consult my teacher for further explanation

Hi Anne,

I thought 'listening' doesn't take 'for'. So it's possible to say
'I was impatiently listening for my teacher to say 'dismissed''?

Hi, Mav,

it is listen to of course..., but sometimes you can find it with "for"
But I would rather say:
"I was impatiently waiting for my teacher to say "dismissed!" "

I'd say A, cause if they are "still" sitting it means the clock hasn't anounced the year yet

Hi Anne,

If so, is it possible to say 'I was listening to you to say that word'?

maverick88,

Anne doesn't seem to be here at the moment.

No. It's not possible to say that.

1. When you are listening to something, the something is already sounding; it can already be heard.
2. When you listen for something, the something has not yet begun to sound; you are waiting for it to be heard.

These are some possibilities:

1a. I was

Hi CJ

What's the difference between '1a' and '1b'?
I am used to seeing 1a...

I'd agree that the right answer isn't among the options.

We need E: 'listening for, to announce'.

Or simply 'waiting for...to announce'.

Oh, my ***. Aren't you joking? I mean, this question is collected from my examination.

And, they, again, have made a mistake. It really makes me confused. Why there are so many mistakes existing in our examinations??

Very much to looking forward your reply...
