Animate Synonym

Hi there, I've realized that my use of animate in this instance doesn't quite work, however, saying "play" doesn't seem quite right either, as all that was really required was to attempt to play some notes. Any suggestions?

My petite size, however, was a problem at my audition: I could animate the French horn well enough to be successful, but I struggled to hold it properly.

Well, it was! But does that make sense as I wasn't actually being taught notes? Or should I change the second sentence to say "my first few scales and songs"?
