Animate direct objects used in questions....

when the object is animate(alive) object is being asked about, how would the question be set up?

ex. there is a boy sitting.
when asking someone else about him, is the question posed.......

"WHO do you see?" or "WHAT do you see?" ????????

is what only applicable to inanimate objects?
would you still say "who do you see" even though you don't know his name????


please help, I need to see the rules about the inanimate DO and animate DO in questions.
and to know which is right!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, if we know it is human, we would say 'Who do you see?' 'What' is for non-human animals, aliens, plants and inanimate objects.

If we were trying to identify a very distant object across a prairie, for instance, and didn't know, we would ask: 'What do you see?' 'Oh, it's a person!' 'Really? Who is it?'
