What is the term for any organism capable of higher thought? i.e. cognition. e.g. humans, bonobos and dolphins.

I once heard this question asked before and I remember the answer being "an intelligent entity". If your definition of higher thought is cognition, then only humans would would be capable of this mental process simply because it includes understanding language. Do dolphins and bonobos understand language?
