Animal Farm Thematic Essay

When thinking of animals, they are thought of as dumb, right? Wrong. The theme of Animal Farm by George Orwell is “Every successful revolution puts on in time, the robes of the tyrant it has deposed,” (Crane Brinton). As the pigs become just like Farmer Jones, and literally dress up in borrowed robes.

The pigs first behave exactly as their tyrant Jones when they use the other animals to do their work and do nothing in return. “We pigs are the brain workers,” in which they excuse themselves of work and justify the stealing of milk and apples, which Old Major, the pig who put forth the revolution claims “Humans use without producing,” which can be said the same now for Napoleon and his gang.

Simply because they can, Napoleon takes away Jessie’s puppies to train them for ‘education’, however he is actually training them as his personal guard dogs, and with the case of his rival Snowball, he gets chased out by the dogs which are a metaphor for Jones’s weapons he used to subdue any troubles in the farm, and was used as a scapegoat for all the troubles caused by the pigs own greediness, “Snowball did this,” and a redirecting of hatred so they don’t realize what is truly occurring.

As if to completely mimic Jones, when boxer collapses, the pigs use Squealer’s eloquent speech to say they are sending him to the best human hospital for treatment. They are really sending him to the slaughterhouse, and afterwards use the money to buy whiskey of which Jones was fervently addicted to.

Therefore, because the pigs eventually acted the same as Jones in every manner, including dressing up in his clothes, the theme of Animal Farm is “Every successful revolution puts on in time, the robes of the tyrant it has deposed.”
