Andy Hertzfeld had taken/took a leave of absence after the Macintosh came out in 1984.

Hello,

I read a book and there was a sentence:
Andy Hertzfeld had taken a leave of absence after the Macintosh came out in 1984. He needed to recharge his batteries and get away from his supervisor...

I do not know why had taken is before the "after". Andy Hertzfeld took a leave of absence after the Macintosh had come/came out in 1984.

I think that first the Mac came out and then he took a leave of absence.

Thanks

Thanks for response,

I wonder, what is the difference between Andy Hertzfeld had taken a leave of absence after the Macintosh came out in 1984. and Andy Hertzfeld took a leave of absence after the Macintosh came out in 1984.

I read many grammar articles regarding "after" with past perfect and it does not make sense here for me.

The action in the "had taken" clause does not occur before the action in the "after" clause (obviously).
It comes before something else mentioned or implied in the on-going narrative in that book, almost certainly something mentioned in previous sentences or paragraphs.
