And yourself?

Hi. In a conversation a native speaker I had asked how was he and he responded; then asked me: "And yourself?"

I already suspect it means something as "And you?", then again, how it is possible that "yourself" is used? Is this question quite common?

Thank in advance for your reply.

I am also not sure whether "had" was required in your first sentence .According to me it is superfluous. Hope some expert will help
