"And you ask me?"

The example: --- "Why don't you find yourself another job?" "AND YOU ASK ME? Because the economic situation is a mess, that's why!" --- Is it correct/appropriate/commonly used? Are there other similar expression you can user for this context?

Hi,
CliveAnd you (who has never worked a day in your life) ask me!
That's my interpretation too.

Either that or - and this is my impression - "and you ask ME, instead of someone else". It depends on which word you put the acccent/intonation on, but there's no way to express that when you write (unless you're willing to use italics or bold characters of course). The question remains open... How about a simple "And you ask?", but maybe it doesn't differ much.

Or maybe: "What do you ask for?" or "What for do you ask?". The latter being (provided it's correct) more colloquial.

Hi,

I took the original question to be whether 'And you ask me?' was a familiar or colloquial expression.

It isn't, in my experience. That doesn't mean you can't say it if you wish to, as long as you think the context , intonation etc will make your meaning clear.
