And why we are here

Good evening.

I've just read the following in a BBC web page about the supposed first evidence of life on Earth that scientists found in Quebec:

'This discovery answers the biggest questions mankind has asked itself - which are: where do we come from and why we are here?'

I don't understand why the second question doesn't follow the normal order of direct interrogative sentences.

Can you explain that?

They have mixed up direct and indirect questions. The correct combinations should be:

... where do we come from and why are we here?
... where we come from and why we are here.

The second was written as an indirect question. It is probably an oversight.
