And when

I slept like log last night. And when I woke up in the morning, it was raining.

(1) Are the sentences correct?
(2) Is the "And" in the second sentence awkward? (Sometimes I see sentences starting with and.)
(3) Is there any rule as to when one is allowed to begin a sentence with "And"?

Thanks

I say they're correct and natural. Beginning a sentence with "And" is fine for conversation and casual writing, but probably not advisable in formal writing. -- A.
