1. "He stood up and sang"

2. "He stood up singing"

Hi, is it always okay to use the 2nd structure instead of the 1st one or is there some exception?

And which one do native use more often orally?

In the first, he did not sing until after he had stood up. In the second, he was singing while rising; he may even have begun to sing while still seated.
