"And so began" vs. "And thus began"

I believe both are grammatically correct, but which is better to use (in a college essay)? To me, "and thus began" comes off a bit stuffy. If it makes any difference, I speak American English. What are your thoughts?

A little more context might help, for example, the complete sentence beginning 'And thus/so began' and the preceding sentence.
