And it broke Vs so it broke

She dropped her phone on the floor, and it broke.

I saw the above example in a YouTube video about compound sentences.
The answer is "and" but I thought it should be "so".
I know these type of exercises are ambiguous sometimes but still I want to know why "and" is preferred over "so".
