And garnered respectful receptions

Hi I don't understand what is to garnered (collect?) receptions ?

""Edwards and Vilsack—both potential candidates for 2008—
had spoken earlier that day and garnered respectful receptions."

Flowersa It is a very odd use of the word and one that I would never employ. Used as it is here, "garnered" means "received". A synonym of receive is collect, but this does not make "garnered" the best choice of words.
