They were extravagantly praised and but for the paper restrictions would have sold like a novel. = They (the books?) got very good reviews and would have sold as many copies as popular novels do if there had not been a paper shortage (?)

Hi Mister Micawber,

They got very good reviews and would have sold as many copies as popular novels do if there had not been a paper shortage.

Would it work if 'do' was to replace with 'would' in the sentence?

Thanks

Sure; it depends on who is suffering the paper shortage, I suppose.
